　　《翘传》主要叙述出身书香门第的王翠翘一生坎坷的生活和遭遇。她出身名门，才貌出众并与书生金重私订终身。可在金重奔丧期间，她为救遭诬陷入狱的父亲而卖身，不料被骗，沦落青楼。阮攸却已越过当时浓重的社会偏见，去赞美王翠翘优雅的身材，尤其那美丽的心灵。长诗通过王翠翘这个人物所受尽的历经十五年的磨难，来突出十八世纪末和十九世纪初的社会真相，以及存在的诸多社会弊端，最明显的便是官僚腐败，等级森严等的社会问题。控诉了腐朽的封建制度对人民的迫害，歌颂了争取爱情、幸福和自由的行动，寄托了人民的美好理想。可以说，《翘传》并不是一般的才子佳人小说，而其已经超越此范围。
